The energy company RWE expanded the Tagebau Garzweiler brown coal mine (an opencast quarry) at the expense of the village of Otzenrath. The neighboring village of Spenrath also met the same fate. Replacement houses were built in new villages called Neu-Otzenrath and Neu-Spenrath.
